Since its inception in 1981, BIBF has played a leading role in the professional development of the Bahrain market. Since its early days of focus on Banking and Insurance to today its breadth of offerings across Academic and executive development, Islamic Finance and the non-financial but equally importance leadership and management learning, the BIBF has remained true to its purpose. The BIBF continues to remain focused on its vision of being the Institute of choice for professional development and deepening Bahrain’s strength in human capital and supporting the growth of its financial services sector.

The Center for Insurance at BIBF is dedicated to the advancement of insurance as a professional service in the Middle East, by providing world-class professional learning opportunities that improve insurance performance. It is also a member of the Institute for Global Insurance Education (IGIE).

Of particular relevance to the sector, the BIBF offers an Insurance Diploma, Advanced Insurance Diploma and Management Insurance Diploma which provides 210 of the 290 credits required to complete the Advanced Diploma in Insurance  (ACII). The three diplomas provide practical applications of local and regional law and practice. All are case study-based which provides candidates post achievement with the necessary knowledge and practical application to function within insurance companies with minimal level on-the-job training.

The CII and the BIBF have jointly developed a dedicated Takaful (Islamic Insurance) learning program to help develop the knowledge needed to operate successfully in this market. This is the first internationally recognized program specialized in Takaful. A huge interest is coming from Europe, North America and Asia in addition to the Arab World.

A recent achievement of note was the translation of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) textbook into Arabic. This initiative proved so successful that it has been extended into an entire internationally recognized qualification: the Professional Insurance Certificate (PIC). It has widened regional access for insurance education, significantly increased insurance career opportunities for Arabic speakers and improved participation and understanding generally. The PIC is the first and the only international insurance qualification in Arabic and is recognized by the CII as being equivalent to 120 CII credits.

In support for insurance regulators in setting a minimum qualification for life and general insurance agents, the CII Academy at BIBF is currently working on the translation of textbooks in the areas of life and general. The task will not be limited to the translation of the materials from English to Arabic but will also include modification of these textbooks to take into account the local legal environment and practice. The Academy will, in addition, set up suitable examinations for the licensing of life and general insurance agents.

BIBF was chosen by insurance regulators in the Arab world to develop a unique qualification to act as a minimum standard which is expected to be met by those who work in the supervision field. The regulator certificate would also provide a comprehensive source that encompasses all essential academic and practical knowledge which would enable candidates to achieve the above goals. This qualification will be offered in both Arabic as well as English language which may benefit regulators beyond the Arab World.
